Search Geological Mysteries Places In Blog

Today I am going to tell you about such a mystery, which has been mentioned since Ram's time. In the Ram's period about which people say that , 'Sri Ramachandra Bhagwan' together with his monkey army and Nil and Nal built that engineering structure (bridge); Which is still located in the same place. But it has become a bit foggy. Ram Sethu is also known as the Adams Bridg.

Ram Setu

Ram Setu  is a bridge built over the Arabian Sea. This Ram Setu connets to Rameswaram village (Pamban Island) in Ramanandapuram district of Tamil Nadu state of India  &  (Mannar Island) Mannar village in Mannar district of  Sri Lanka.

Ram Setu and  satellite position of Ram setu (with map link) are given in the image below.

According to the mythology of Hinduism, this Ram Setu (bridge) was built by Lord Rama to reach & save Sita. People say that the water here (over the Rama Setu). is very shallow and we can easily walk over it.

Scientists say that this is a natural bridge made of coral which is  harden stone boulder which is submerged in the sea water. Which is later buried by the sea sand.
Some scientists say that the sand there is 6,000 years old, while the stones there are 4000 years old, in between which there was the Ram period was present, it is possible that there the Ram setu (bridge) was built by Ram with the army of monkeys during the Ram period itself. No historical evidence has yet been found ;  Except that it has been mentioned in Ramayana, and that reference is still being seen in the true situation.

It is mentioned in the Ramayana, that the bridge was made from floating stones (which floated by writing Rama on it). Surprisingly, such floating stones exist around Rameswaram.
According to geologists, during the eruption of volcano,  when the lava containing gas and its foam comes over the ground, it cools rapidly;  Due to which a stone is formed in which there are many empty holes of gas is present .  The same stone is called as Pumice. They can float above the water due to it having a lot of air filled holes, but what after that hole is filled with water? In these days, the holes must be filled with water; So how will they swim? The answer could not be found.

Anyway, till today, we must have read all this somewhere, but as always we have to go ahead of it.

My geology study shows that Rama Setu is a 'Tombolo'.  Tombolo is a geological structure, which is formed by the deposition process of the sand in the shallow sea.   Tombolo  is a filled sand bridge connecting the main continent and the island together.

Tombolo

How is Tombolo  and Ram Setu made?

Answer is :

The sea wave brings with it a lot of sand and it floats in the sea water due to the speed of the sea waves, but when the speed of the waves decreases, the water is unable to lift it and it gets deposited; Due to which the wave becomes motionless. because of it  Beach, Spit, Tombolo, bar,  such depositional structures of sand are formed.

The sea floor is shallow where the continent and islands are nearby. Due to which the sea water also becomes very shallow. And the sea waves are dimmed due to the sea being shallow there ;   due to which the sand which is brought in the sea is deposited there. The several years process of depositing   of sea sand ,  creates a bridge of sand. Which is called Tombolo.

How does Tombolo Form? And how did Ram Sethu form? Some of his pictures wise stages  are given below.  which is help to understand explanation  how  stage by stage Tombolo & Ram Setu Formed .

1 St Stage of  Tombolo  Formation: -

In the past, whichever sand has been brought, the velocity of the waves is decreases due to collision with the stones on the sea shore, and because of that sand is start  deposited, which causes the formation of  'Beach' (which is at the edge of both the continent and the island).

1 Stage to be Ram Setu Formation: -

In the same way, velocity of the waves is decreases due to collision with the rocks on the shore of Pamban Island and Mannar Island; And whatever sand was brought, that sand is deposited  on the shore of Pamban Island and Mannar Island.

1St stage of formation

2 nd Stage of Tombolo Formation: -

Later, the same deposited 'Sand Beachs' (which is the 'Beach' at the edge of both the continent and the island) is reduces the speed of waves in the sea and as the speed reduced , so the sand is begin to  accumulate in a line from continent to island and from island to continent  (towards each other) .

2 nd Stage to be Ram Sethu Formation : -

In the same way the waves of the same deposited 'Sand Beachs' ('Beach' of Pamban Island and Mannar Island) started to reduce the speed of the waves in the sea; And as the speed decreased, the sand started to accumulate in a line from Pamban Island towards Mannar Island and from Mannar Island towards Pamban Island (towards each other).

2 nd stage of  formation

3 rd Stage of  Tombolo Formation: -

The same sand deposited  makes a depositional structure of Sand forming a line that connects the continent and the island to each other. The bridge structure of the same Sand forming a line which connects the continent and the island to each other is called Tombolo .

3 rd Stage to be  Ram Setu Formation: -

The same accumulated sand formed a structure in a line (Tombolo) which  connected Pamban island and Mannar  Island with each other.   'Sri Ramchandra Bhagwan' together with his monkey army and Nil and Nal have built a bridge  On the same structure of sand Tombolo;  by putting stones  during the Ramayana period, which is called as Ram Setu.

3 rd Stage of formation

If we see the whole incident, according to me; when the time of Ramayana was there,Tombolo structure was not completely formed; Or was it at the shallow depth below the water level of the sea. Due to which Ram and the army of monkeys had to make that bridge.   But it is a matter of importance that;  they was made a bridge where the water level was already shallow due to Tombolo structure has under developing .  That means  Ram , Nil , Nal and Vanar Sena had such a strong practice of oceanography,  Due to which he chose the same place for the bridge.  And the bridge was made by putting stones on it. And reached Sri Lanka.

'Why does that bridge appear to be broken or damaged '?

    the answer is :-
Today the Tombolo can be seen broken, after the Tombolo were fully Formed ,  the sea  waves started to increase their velocity  due to changes  in the atmosphere and  strong flow of the wind.  because of wich Tombolo started to disintegrate in the direction of the strong current of the waves, and It has started appearing as  the satelite image showing below. Whose process of braking of tombolo will be clear from the image given  below.

This is a natural recycling process. The law of nature is that 'whatever is made ,it breaks. it again  made then again breaks' (we can call it Nature's own balancing rule of cycling). But His place and time are not fixed.

This is my scientific guess with explanation.
